Independent guidance in Finland

About Trafflicom and how we work

Trafflicom is an independent information portal about Finnish vehicle registration, traffic rules, and compliance obligations. We are based in Tampere — not a government agency, an inspection station, or an insurance company. Our work is to read the published rules and fees, organize them around the questions real drivers ask, and explain the process in English.

A portal built around the questions drivers actually ask

Finnish vehicle paperwork is procedural and well documented. The problem is that the documentation sits across registers, fee tables, and different service channels, and most of it assumes you already know the vocabulary. If you moved to Finland, bought your first car here, or imported a vehicle, you meet that gap immediately.

This page describes how the guidance on this site is put together, what it deliberately does not cover, and how to reach us when a situation needs more than an article. If you already know the rules well, treat the pages as a checklist and a pointer to the current official source.

Written for newcomers

No prior knowledge of Finnish terminology is assumed anywhere on the site.

Published sources only

Every guide traces back to a register, an instruction, or a fee table that is public.

Boundaries stated up front

We say what we cannot do, and which channel handles it instead.

Why we exist

One place that explains the process before you have to ask an office

The gap between the published rules and a driver who can act on them is widest in the first months. First registration, a change of owner, decommissioning a car that will stand unused, commissioning it again for the winter season — each one has a channel, a sequence, and a cost, and none of it reads plainly if the vocabulary is new.

Trafflicom exists to close that gap: one site that explains those procedures side by side, in plain English, and points to the official channel where each step is actually completed. We are a starting point and an explainer. We are not a substitute for the official record.

How the guidance is researched

We work from published Finnish sources. Where a summary appears on this site, the summary is ours — the underlying rule is not. Two habits follow from that and shape every page.

When a topic involves a fee, we describe it as a published fee rather than quoting a number that may change over a service season. When a rule has conditions attached, we point to where the condition is checked, so you can confirm the current position instead of relying on a figure from an old page.

  • The Transport Register

Status lookups and the register entries that decisions are based on. Guides describe what a register entry means before explaining what to do about it.

  • Registration instructions

The published step-by-step instructions for registration, changes of owner and holder, imports, and the status actions around them.

  • Customer fee tables

Where a charge belongs to a step, we name the step and describe how the fee is published rather than freezing a price into the text.

  • Public service portals

The registration guidance published for residents, including the English-language practical information written for people living in Finland.

Where our role ends

What we do not do

We do not register vehicles, inspect them, sell insurance, or represent anyone before an authority. We do not issue registration certificates or plates, and we cannot change an entry in the Transport Register. We do not publish prices as offers and we do not act as a dealer or a broker.

If your question needs an official decision, a filing, or a payment, the answer on this site will point you to the channel that handles it. Being clear about that boundary is part of being useful — a portal that quietly implies it can file on your behalf would waste your time.

What we can help with

Explaining what a procedure involves, which channel handles it, what to prepare before you go, and what a missed notification can lead to.

What needs an official channel

Registering or decommissioning a vehicle, paying a fee, changing a register entry, or any decision that only an authority can make.

Kept current

Keeping the content current

Registration status actions, fee tables, and service channels change. Our practice is to review the guides against the published sources and update the pages when something material shifts, rather than treating an article as finished once it is written.

If you spot something that no longer matches what an official source says, tell us through the contact page and describe what you saw. Corrections from readers who are actually going through the process are one of the ways this site stays accurate.

Who the site is for

The guides are written for private owners, buyers and sellers of used vehicles, people importing a car into Finland, and foreign residents working through the Finnish system for the first time. They are also useful for small businesses that keep a vehicle or two and want the compliance steps collected in one place.

We assume no prior knowledge of Finnish terminology. If you know the rules well, you will probably find the pages most useful as a checklist and a pointer to the current official source.

The topics we cover

Editorial approach

We prefer plain sentences to legal paraphrase, and we keep the focus on what a reader has to do next. That means naming the action — decommissioning, change of owner, first registration — naming the channel that handles it, and naming what can go wrong if it is skipped.

We do not use testimonials or customer ratings on this site, because we have not collected verified ones. Where we are uncertain, we say so and point to the source that settles the question.

Three questions drive every page: what does the action actually mean, which channel completes it, and what happens if it is skipped? If a paragraph does not answer one of those, it does not belong on the page.

Start with the guide that matches your situation

If you are registering a vehicle in Finland for the first time, begin with the registration guide. If your question is about a status action, a transfer, or a rule you have to comply with, the four topic sections in the menu cover it — and the FAQ answers the questions that come up most often.
