Ask us about a vehicle question

If a guide here does not cover your situation, send the details and we will point you to the right direction. We answer questions about Finnish vehicle registration, traffic rules, and compliance duties.

Open Monday to Friday, 9:00–18:00. Messages are read in the order they arrive and answered at the address you give us.

What to include in your message

The more concrete the question, the more useful the answer. You do not need to frame it formally, and there is no template you have to follow.

  1. Start with the goal

Tell us what you are trying to do: register an import, file a change of owner, return a car to traffic, or something else. One sentence is enough to start.

  2. Name your stage

Say how far along you are and what you have already sent or received. If a notification was filed, mention which one and who filed it.

  3. Add the register view

If you have checked the public data service, describe what it currently shows for the vehicle, including the registration status.

  4. Or just describe it

Unsure which guide applies? Write the situation in your own words. We will read it and either answer, or name the guide that covers it.

Questions we can help with

These are explanation questions. We work through the rules with you and put the options in plain language, so you know what the next step looks like before you send anything anywhere.

  • First registration. How a vehicle that has never been registered in Finland, including a used import, moves from arrival to a Finnish entry.

  • Change of owner and change of holder. What separates the two, and which one matches a sale, a lease, or a car you simply borrow for a while.

  • Decommissioning and commissioning. When a car can leave traffic, what it means while it is out, and how it returns.

  • Everyday traffic rules. The day-to-day obligations that come with keeping a vehicle in traffic, explained without the legal shorthand.

  • Vehicle tax data and transfer permits. What the tax view is telling you, and when a transfer permit is the piece you are missing.

Most questions arrive at the paperwork stage: a notification filed, a status unclear, a step skipped. A short written description with the background included usually gives us enough to work with.

Where the explanation stops working

If your question is about the outcome of a specific filing, or a fee you have been charged, the authority that holds the record is the right place to ask. We will say so plainly and tell you which service that is, rather than guess at a decision that is not ours to read.

We do not register vehicles, inspect them, issue plates, or change entries in the Transport Register.

That is not a brush-off, and it is not a way to close the door on you. It is the fastest route to an answer that actually changes your record.

If your question requires an official decision, a payment, or a correction to your vehicle's record, we will tell you so and point you to the appropriate service: an inspection station offering registration services, an insurance company, a dealership handling the paperwork, or an online service. What we can do is explain the rules around it, so you arrive at the right counter knowing what you need.

Send your question

Write in your own words. Describe the situation, name the vehicle's registration status if you know it, and say what step you are stuck on.

Before you send

  • Look up the vehicle in the public data service and note its registration status.

  • Confirm which notifications have already been filed, and by whom.

  • Read the guide that matches your situation. If a gap is left, that gap is exactly what we want to hear about.

Message details

Required fields are marked. We reply to the address you give here.

Messages are read in the order they arrive. We do not pass your details to third parties for marketing and we do not add you to a mailing list. If a question turns out to be one many readers ask, it may be added to the FAQ in general form, without identifying you.

Office and phone details

If you are in Tampere and prefer to call, the number is the direct route. For anything that involves documents or a description of your case, the form is better, because you can lay the details out in writing and we can respond to each point.

Use whichever suits the question. A short call often settles a simple rules question; a written message is easier to follow when there are dates, notifications, and a vehicle history involved.

How we handle your message

A short, plain account of what happens between your message arriving and you getting a reply.

We read in order of arrival

Messages are answered to the address you provide, oldest first. Complicated cases may take longer than a one-line rules question, and we would rather reply properly than quickly.

Your details stay here

Personal details you send are handled according to our privacy policy, linked in the footer of every page. We do not pass them to third parties for marketing.

Questions can improve the site

No mailing list, no follow-up sales. But if your question is one many readers share, a general version of it may join the FAQ, without identifying you.

Before you write

Three checks answer a lot of questions before they are asked

Look up the vehicle in the public data service and note its registration status. Confirm which notifications have already been filed and by whom. Then read the guide that matches your situation. If those steps leave a gap, that gap is exactly what we want to hear about. A specific question with the background included gets a specific answer, and it helps us improve the page that missed it.
